I’m having trouble entering text when I’m in the app store and was wondering what I could do to fix this problem. I try to enter letters, but they don’t show up in the edit field after I’m through and then check to make sure I’ve done it correctly. What happens is that I’ll press a letter, let’s say the letter B, but after a short delay I hear my phone say “bravo”, although the letter isn’t going into the text field, and when I flick to the right I get a message to “double tap to dismiss”. I just tried tapping a note in the notes app, but the same thing happens and no text is entered.
I can dictate what I want to look for in the app store, but that doesn’t help me when it’s time to enter my password and I can’t tap it in to buy my app. Does anyone know what’s going on here and how I can fix this issue? By the way, I'm using IOS 7.1.2. Thanks for reading.
sounds like you have the regular settings enabled, which means that, in order for letters to be selected, you'd have to double tap each one, immediately after your finger is on it.
I use touch type, where I just double tap each letter or number, then lift my finger off the phone, and it's done. so, I hope my explanation makes sense.
Chelsea's right on this one.
Heree's how you set that:
Double tap on the text field to bring up the keyboard, where you usually would try to type. Now use the roter to go to Typing Mode. That's with the two finger twist motion. Twist individually, like a socket wrench, until you hear it say Typing Mode. Then flick straight down with one finger until it says Standard Typing. Then use the roter to socket wrench away back to Characters and you will have that setting saved. After that, when you lift a finger, for most keys it will enter the key automatically. The exception is the return key.
Thank you, Chelsea and Leo.
One thing, Leo, is that I was trying to use your directions and it still wouldn't work so I decided to try and set it to touch typing and voila! I'm glad there were only two options for me to try. Thank you both for your help.
Touch typing is the correct setting, my bad, sorry for that.
you're welcome. glad you got it fixed.
personally, touch typing works best for me, although I had to get someone to change it to that, cause I can't, for the life of me, use the rotor myself, due to my hand coordination being different than most people's.
Chelsea, just an idea, and I don't know if it would work based on your physical disabilities. Try laying the phone down and using one finger from each hand to do the rotor. Hold your less dominant hand's finger on the screen and use the dominant hand's finger to circle around it, sort of like a geometric compass, if you have seen one of those. It's something sighted people use to draw circles: a stationary pivot point that you orbit the pencil around. So in your case, use a finger from your less dominant hand as the stationary pivot point, use the finger from your dominant hand to "orbit" around the pivot point.
I can't pretend to understand your physical issues, but, ... thinking like an engineer here ... hoping it leads to a solution that works for you.
Leo
thanks, leo, but the only way I can think of that would allow me to use the rotor successfully, is if I had something to set the phone on, so it would stay still.
as it currently is, I hold the phone with one hand, and type/do other gestures with the other hand.
to Apple's credit, though, most things on the iPhone are pretty straightforward/simple for me to accomplish, but being unable to use the rotor is beyond frustrating, and I know I can't possibly be the only one who has this experience.
Hi, I am just thinking out loud as it were, but does assistive touch have an
option for the roter gesture?
I know it did not work in conjunction with VoiceOver until IOS 6, but figured I'd
throw that out there.
For people that want more accurit type the tap works best.
I also use touch.
I always suggest putting the phone down on a table, or your leg when typing. Holdeing it in one hand is to much trouble it seems.
